TikTok ban in the US is coming – what implications does it have for your business?

This US ban was supposed to be on Jan 19 2025 – but it lasted only 24 hours – then people could use it again because Trump's administration gave the ByteDance company some time to find any other solution.

ByteDance has until April 5th to decide whether to sell TikTok to a US entity or leave the US.

TikTok is banned in India, Nepal, Afghanistan, and Somalia;
specific prohibitions are in the EU, UK, US, Australia and New Zealand.

Proposals to buy TikTok have so far been made by:

  • Oracle

  • Amazon

  • OnlyFans

  • HBAR Foundation

  • Elon Musk

  • Mr Beast and

  • Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian (to name a few)

If TikTok does not accept the offer, many small US businesses may be affected by this move, as well as advertisers from other countries that were targeting American audiences. At the same time, it may also set a precedent for other countries (continents) that may follow this pattern.

❓ Do you support selling TikTok to an American company, or are you in favour of banning it?

❓ If TikTok were banned, how would it affect you and your business?

@konrad_sx The thing is whether China will be vulnerable to take their offer.

Launching soon!

I vote for OnlyFans to buy TikTok, that could take an unexpected turn of events :D
But seriously maybe the Reddit founder would be the one I'd go with

@mzkvisuals I think that those dances would be more eroti... ehm... I mean exotic after that :D

👋 Hi This is Jemmy from oMoo team. We're launching oMoo - the music player with Haptic on RAIKYS now!

🧏 oMoo is made for people with hearing impairments
Many of our users are active on TikTok, we also communicate with them on that platform. We might lose the channel to connect with our users, so it's kinda a headache for our operations team.😞

Nika

@amiaomomo how many followers you have there?

Alex

Well to be honest I don't know if you were around but before Tiktok we had the Vine app back in 2012. I have no clue why that suddenly fell apart seeing how it was the first loop video app. And if TikTok is to go, I suppose another app will just take its place.

Nika

It would be great to see some European app to take this place. In Europe, we were a little bit behind with social media and that would be a huge step to show off. But yeah, we have also many regulations...

As someone from India... I would say, India and Indian businesses are doing well without TikTok for ages. People will find a way...there's always a plan B available.

Guess Americans will learn soon. There's always a replacement in technology

Nika

What do you use instead the most for business (I mean social media)?

@busmark_w_nika Instagram rules. There are startups who are spending for sponsored ads and making good money

I believe that if TikTok is banned, it might impact New small business owners that started a few months ago and have grown their audience on TikTok. You will be able to easily gain followers and engagement.

I'm interested about hearing from others , how this would impact their businesses.

Nika

@isha_nasir I think they will not be so affected compared to already established businesses that created the whole presence only on TT and rely on it.

I believe the issue of selling TikTok to an American company or banning it has many nuances. Personally, I lean towards selling the platform to an American company to ensure data security while still maintaining access to the app for users and businesses. Banning TikTok could negatively impact many small businesses, content creators, and advertisers who rely on the platform to engage with their audience.

Nika

@islam_akramov do you know about any serious business that built their whole business model only on TT?

Brad Bertsche

The whole forcing TikTok to sell seems silly. If it does get banned something else will take it's place. Makes you realize you shouldn't be all in on any one platform.

Nika

Yep, when you are totally dependent on the 3rd party platform, you are doomed. That's why it is not the best idea to build a tool purely on a platform like X or so. You never know.
